Sioux Falls & Rapid City Planning

This page is a planning aid for South Dakota’s two biggest metro hubs: Sioux Falls (east) and Rapid City (Black Hills). We do not invent hole counts, course ratings, fees, or rankings. Start with official park pages and the PDGA Course Directory, then confirm hours, layouts, fees, and closures on site.

These cities are not a casual same-day duplex. Rough drive time between downtown Sioux Falls and downtown Rapid City is typically on the order of 5–6 hours on I-90—plan each metro as its own trip (or as overnight bookends on a longer Black Hills / prairie week), not as a morning/afternoon swap.

Official starting points

Resource Use it for
PDGA Course Directory Search/filter South Dakota (and city name); verify attributes against park signs
City of Sioux Falls — Disc Golf City-listed courses, hours, free-play note, tournament contact
City of Rapid City — Sport Complexes City disc-golf table (hole counts + addresses)
City of Rapid City — Municipal Parks Park addresses and park-hours context
Southeast Tech — Disc Golf Course Campus 9-hole course open to the public (Sioux Falls)
Black Hills Disc Golf Club Rapid City club companion (maps/events)—cross-check with city pages
UDisc Navigation aid—verify against tee signs

Sioux Falls (city parks list)

Per Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation:

Park / course (city label) City notes (city wording)
Tuthill Park Challenging 18-hole layout; scorecards and an aerial course map at the top of the hill near the course entrance
Spencer Park 9-hole course through trees and prairie grass near the Big Sioux River and Greenway Trail; combine with Tomar by crossing the footbridge on the trail
Tomar Park 9-hole course that tests novice and experienced players; tee-offs emphasize accuracy over long distance

Hole counts above come only from the city disc golf page. Dakota at Home / city resource listings commonly place Spencer near 3501 South Cliff Avenue, Tuthill near 3500 South Cliff Avenue, and Tomar near 100 West Twin Oaks Road—still confirm parking and trail access on the city’s park pages or on site.

Campus add-on (not a city park): Southeast Technical College describes a 9-hole public course along the east side of campus (2320 N Career Ave). Equipment checkout is available at the Student Success Center front desk per the college page. Treat campus hours and access rules as TBD against that page before you go.

Metro tip: PDGA and club pages may list additional Sioux Falls–area courses (county parks, schools, private layouts) that are not on the City of Sioux Falls disc golf list. Treat those as TBD until you confirm the managing agency, hours, parking, and fees on an official page.

Rapid City (city sports-complexes list)

Per the Rapid City Parks Division — Sport Complexes disc golf table:

Course (city label) Address (per city) City hole note
9 Hole (West Omaha/Cross Street) West Omaha/Cross Street 9 holes (city wording)
Jackson Park Course 3040 Jackson Boulevard 18 holes (city wording)
LaCroix Park 3820 Odde Drive 12 holes (city wording)

Hole counts and addresses above come only from the city table. The municipal parks list also places Jackson Park at 3040 Jackson Boulevard and LaCroix Park at 3820 Odde Drive (and lists Robbinsdale Park at 631 East Oakland among city parks). If a third-party directory shows a different hole count or “closed / events only” status for Robbinsdale or any other Rapid City site, treat that as TBD—confirm on a city page, club notice, or tee signs before you drive.

Black Hills Disc Golf Club publishes companion maps for Jackson and LaCroix; still verify hours, parking, and current pin positions against city notices and on-site signs.

Black Hills tip: PDGA and UDisc may list campground or resort courses near Rapid City that are not on the city’s sport-complexes disc golf table. Confirm access rules, fees, and guest policies with the managing property—never assume city-park norms.

Sample trip shapes (pick one, keep it light)

These are route ideas, not ranked recommendations:

  1. Sioux Falls deep dive — Tuthill (city: 18-hole) plus the Spencer/Tomar combined 9+9 footbridge loop, or add Southeast Tech’s 9-hole campus course.
  2. Rapid City city-list day — Jackson Park (city: 18-hole) plus LaCroix (city: 12-hole) or the West Omaha/Cross Street 9-hole.
  3. East-to-west overnight — One full day in Sioux Falls, overnight on I-90, one full day in Rapid City (or reverse). Do not try to stack both metros in a single daylight window.
  4. Weather plan — Stay in one metro if wind, storms, or winter road reports look ugly; prairie and Black Hills weather both change fast.

Before you leave:

  1. Open PDGA filtered to South Dakota, then narrow by city.
  2. Open the matching city parks / sport-complexes page for hours, parking, and rules.
  3. Check for events, temporary layouts, or closures via club pages or park notices.
  4. Pack water and layers; summer heat on open prairie holes and wind across the Black Hills foothills are both real.
  5. On arrival, use course map literacy and etiquette & safety.

What to verify on site

No fabricated stats. If a blog claims a rating, length, or “best course in South Dakota,” verify on PDGA, the city parks page, or tee signs—or leave the number out. We prefer links over invented figures. Broader Midwest context: Midwest Disc Golf Courses Starter. Neighboring Nebraska day-trip sibling: Omaha & Lincoln Course Planning.
