Fargo & Bismarck Course Planning

This page is a planning aid for two North Dakota hubs: the Fargo / Moorhead metro (east, on the Red River) and Bismarck (central, on the Missouri). We do not invent hole counts, course ratings, fees, or rankings. Start with official park pages and the PDGA Course Directory, then confirm hours, layouts, fees, and closures on site.

These cities are not a casual same-day duplex. Rough drive time between downtown Fargo and downtown Bismarck is typically on the order of about 3 hours on I-94 (~190–200 road miles)—plan each metro as its own trip (or as overnight bookends on a longer prairie corridor), not as a morning/afternoon swap.

Fargo area (city parks list)

Per Fargo Parks — Disc Golf:

Adult courses named on the district disc golf page (hole counts from that page and matching park pages):

Park / course (city label) Address (per park page) City hole note Fee note
Iwen Park 1209 52nd Avenue S, Fargo, ND 58104 18-hole + separate 9-hole (district + park wording) Fees TBD against park signs / Fargo Parks (park page does not state free play)
Oak Grove Park 170 Maple Street N, Fargo, ND 58102 18-hole (district + park wording) Free to play during park hours (Oak Grove park page)
Trollwood Park 3664 Elm Street N, Fargo, ND 58102 18-hole (district + park wording) Free to play during park hours (Trollwood park page)

Hole counts and free-play wording above come only from Fargo Parks pages. The district disc golf page also lists several junior courses (Elephant / Percy Godwin, Fox Run, Milwaukee Trail Middle, Osgood, Stonebridge #2) with short hole distances and small basket counts—treat those as youth/beginner add-ons and confirm current basket status on the district page before you go.

Access tips: Confirm parking and any temporary road or fairway work on the named park page before you drive (Oak Grove has posted roadway/parking project notices in the past; Iwen sits along the Red River with shared trail use). The Oak Grove page notes a pedestrian bridge to Moorhead’s Memorial Park—Minnesota-side layouts still need their own managing-agency confirmation.

Metro tip: PDGA and apps may list additional Fargo–Moorhead–West Fargo courses (county parks, schools, private layouts, Moorhead MN sites) that are not on the Fargo Parks disc golf list. Treat those as TBD until you confirm the managing agency, hours, parking, and fees on an official page.

Bismarck (BPRD outdoor list + campus add-on)

Per Bismarck Parks and Recreation District — Disc Golf Courses, BPRD has two outdoor disc golf courses:

Course (BPRD label) Address (per BPRD) Hole note Fee / hours note
General Sibley Park & Campground 5001 S. Washington St. 18-hole (BPRD: meets requirements to host PDGA tournaments) Disc-golf fees TBD against park signs / BPRD. Day-use area: sunrise–sunset year-round; park page notes gates open 8:00 a.m. and lock at sunset in camping season, and closed the rest of the year—confirm gate access before you go. Camping fees on that page are for campsites, not a stated disc-golf day-use fee.
Lions Park 1601 E. Boulevard Ave. (eastern half; parking east of Hillside Aquatic Complex per BPRD) 9-hole (BPRD + Lions Park page) Disc-golf fees TBD against park signs / BPRD. Park hours on the Lions Park page: 6:00 a.m.–11:00 p.m.

Hole counts and addresses above come only from BPRD pages. Do not assume free play unless a park sign or BPRD page says so.

Campus add-on (not a BPRD park): Bismarck State College invites students, alumni, campus guests, community members, and families to play a nine-hole course (holes 1–9). BSC wording: open dawn to dusk unless otherwise stated; park in designated lots (Jack Science Center or lower level of the National Energy Center of Excellence); alcohol- and tobacco-free campus. Fees and any temporary closures remain TBD against that page and campus notices.

Capital tip: PDGA and UDisc may list Mandan or other Burleigh/Morton County layouts that are not on the BPRD disc golf list. Confirm access rules, fees, and guest policies with the managing agency—never assume Bismarck city-park norms.

Sample trip shapes (pick one, keep it light)

These are route ideas, not ranked recommendations:

  1. Fargo adult-course day — Oak Grove and Trollwood (city: free 18-hole each per park pages) plus Iwen’s 9-hole or 18-hole layout if time and river/trail conditions allow.
  2. Bismarck city-list day — General Sibley (BPRD: 18-hole) plus Lions (BPRD: 9-hole), or add BSC’s campus 9-hole if campus parking and dawn-to-dusk rules fit.
  3. I-94 overnight corridor — One full day in Fargo, overnight on I-94 (Jamestown / Valley City are common midway towns), one full day in Bismarck (or reverse). Do not try to stack both metros in a single daylight window.
  4. Weather plan — Stay in one metro if wind, storms, or winter road reports look ugly; open prairie fairways and river-bottom woods both change fast.

Before you leave:

  1. Open PDGA filtered to North Dakota, then narrow by city (Fargo; Bismarck; plus Moorhead MN only if you have a Minnesota managing-agency page).
  2. Open the matching Fargo Parks or BPRD page for hours, parking, gates, and rules.
  3. Check for events, temporary layouts, or closures via park notices (General Sibley hosts scheduled park events; Fargo Parks posts league contacts on the disc golf page).
  4. Pack water and layers; summer heat on open holes and wind across the prairie are both real.
  5. On arrival, use course map literacy and etiquette & safety.

What to verify on site

No fabricated stats. If a blog claims a rating, length, or “best course in North Dakota,” verify on PDGA, the city parks page, or tee signs—or leave the number out.
