PDGA Amateur vs Pro Explained

The Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) runs the primary sanctioned competitive framework in many regions. Divisions separate players by skill, age, and gender categories. Details evolve—always read the current Competition Manual and event page.

Big picture

Amateur (Am) Professional (Pro)
Typical goal Competition, ratings, trophies / merch Competition with cash eligibility in pro divisions
Payouts Generally non-cash awards (trophies, discs, etc.) per policy Cash purses in eligible pro divisions
Membership PDGA membership required for most sanctioned events Same—membership + correct division registration
Ratings PDGA player rating used for eligibility guidance Same rating system; division choice still has rules

Exact award and eligibility rules are in the PDGA Competition Manual and can include exceptions—do not rely on this summary alone for registration.

Ratings (high level)

PDGA maintains a player rating based on round performance relative to course difficulty in rated rounds. Higher ratings generally indicate stronger play. Ratings are not betting lines. We will not frame competition as odds or gambling.

For current rating explanations and lookup, use official PDGA player tools on pdga.com.

Choosing a division

  1. Read the event’s offered divisions on the registration page (Disc Golf Scene, PDGA event page, etc.).
  2. Check age-based (e.g., junior, masters) and gender divisions as published.
  3. Respect rating floors/ceilings when the event or manual specifies them.
  4. When unsure, ask the Tournament Director (TD)—not a random comment thread.
